EINS OG

EINS is a comparative adverb, ADVR. When there is an overt ADJ head in the EINS OG construction, EINS projects ADJP (OG in this construction always projects PP). When there is an overt ADV head in the EINS OG construction, then it projects an ADVP. If there is no overt ADJ or ADV head in the EINS OG construction, it projects a ADVP by default but it still can project an ADJP if an ADJ is implied (unexpressed), though we do not overtly indicate a null ADJ in the annotation.

So EINS in John er eins (ADJ góður) og Bill projects ADJP whether the ADJ is expressed or not.

EINS OG is always treated as taking a full clausal comparative, parallel to comparatives with EN: CP-CMP#EN_(BETUR_EN_(CP-CMP)_...). This is true even if only a single (nominative) NP follows OG, as below. Thus, "eins og Bill" is treated as parallel to "eins og Bill er".

The non-gapped counterpart to the example above is the following:

            (CP-CMP (WADJP-1 0)

EINS X EINS OG

In the case of an EINS OG construction following (and semantically connected to) a preceding EINS head, e.g. "eins stór eins og Jón" or "svo stór eins og Jón", we parse the whole EINS X EINS OG Y as a single constituent, with the second EINS OG expression projecting its own ADVP, as in the example below:

(ADJP (ADVP (ADV nær-nærri)
                      (NP (PRO-D því-það)))
                (ADVR eins-eins)
                (ADJ-N hrygg-hryggur)
                (PP (P í-í)
                    (NP (N-D huga-hugi)))
                (ADVP (ADVR eins-eins)
                      (PP (P og-og)
                          (CP-CMP (WADVP-1 0)
                                  (IP-SUB (ADVP *T*-1)
                                          (ADVP-TMP (ADV þá-þá)))))))

If the EINS X is separated from the EINS OG Y expression, then the EINS OG Y expression is parsed as extraposed, leaving an *ICH* trace of its ADVP within the phrase containing EINS X, as in the examples below:
