Complements of ADV

The adjective "nærri" is tagged and parsed in the same way as "near" or "nearly" in the PPCEME, PPCME2, depending on its meaning (see Treatment of individual words ). When "nærri" means "nearly", as in "it was nearly nighttime when they reached the town", it is tagged/parsed as an ADV, and projects an ADVP as shown below. If there is a dative pronoun, it is parsed as the NP complement of ADV; this is the *only* case in which there is an NP complement of ADV, and it is the only way in which the treatment of "nærri" differs from the treatment of "nearly" in the PPCME2, PPCEME, since the construction containing a dative pronoun does not occur in English.

IMPORTANT: Note that the predicate adjective phrase, (ADJP (ADJ-FPNSP klettalausar-klettalaus)), attaches at the IP level and does not form a constituent with the ADVP with "nærri"; this is consistent with the PPCME2,PPCEME treatment of "nearly" and "near" with the meaning of "nearly".

When "nærri" means "near", as in "they were sailing near land", it is tagged "ADJ", projects an ADJP-LOC where ADJ has an NP complement; see ADJP#Complements_of_ADJ
